Hi everyone

February is already upon us, I cant believe how quickly. There is a lot of news in the newsletter this week as well as product updates and patches as well as new KBs that I suggest taking a look at in case they are applicable to your infrastructure.

There will be no newsletter for the next 2 weeks as I will be travelling to the US for our company kick off. This is a great event and allows not only for a great get together with others at VMware but also for us to experience the latest and greatest technology that I will be able to show my customers during the year. This is important as it allows me to ork with my customers on their roadmap with a clear vision on what is coming down the line that aligns with their corporate technology goals.

So enjoy the newsletter and I will speak to you all again in 2 weeks time.

Office of the CTO Blogs: OVF 2.0 is here!

Over the past several years OVF (Open Virtualization Format) has been one of the most popular and widely adopted standards in the IaaS space. In fact, it’s the only national and international standard for virtualization and cloud computing.

OVF 2.0 was recently released and just announced by the DMTF. It has many new and improved features and capabilities benefitting both end-users and cloud service providers. This specification is another strong step in improving the interoperability and portability of workloads for virtualization and cloud computing.

Some of the new improvements to OVF 2.0 include:

Improved support for network configuration
Package encryption for safe delivery
Scaling and deployment options
Support for basic placement policies, including Affinity and availability placement
Shared disks
Advanced device boot order
Advanced mechanisms for passing data to guest

These updates add security with support for a new section – EncryptionSection – which will be the focal point for the encryption functionality. This new section provides a single location for placing the encryption algorithm related markup along with the corresponding reference list that points to the encrypted OVF content.

Now in OVF 2.0, each logical network will contain a set of networking attributes that should be applied when mapping the logical network at deployment time to a physical or virtual network. Networking attributes are specified by embedding or referencing zero or more instances of network port profile. The network port profile is a new and flexible mechanism which allows network configuration information to be embedded within the OVF or it can be represented in an external file that will be referenced by the OVF. Lastly, the network port profile provides a more comprehensive set of configurations and properties which allows for reservation requests of bandwidth for example. Given the newness of this specification, it will take time for vendors to add support for OVF 2.0 and include in their future products. However, as adoption of cloud and the need for interoperability continues to grow, I expect we won’t be waiting too long!

vCloud Networking and Security 5.1 Manager and Edge Deployment

In order to deploy Edge Gateway(s), we need to first deploy vCloud Networking and Security Manager (formerly known as vShield Manager) and connect it with vCenter.

L4 Load Balancing Support in vCloud Networking & Security Edge Gateway?

Load Balancing is just one of the many networking services provided by the vCloud Networking and Security Edge Gateway which is a part of the VMware vCloud Networking and Security solution. By default, when the load balancing service is enabled, Layer-7 (L7 proxy) load balancing is automatically used which uses both SNAT (Source Network Address Translation) and DNAT (Destination Network Address Translation). However, an additional load balancing mode Layer-4 (L4) can be enabled using the vCloud Networking and Security APIs. Layer-4 mode only uses DNAT and preserves the original client IP Address of the request. In addition to the above differences, there are also performance differences between L7 and L4 load balancing and you can find more details in the recently published KB article (KB2042799).

vSphere 5.1 – VDS Feature Enhancements – Port Mirroring – Part 1

Network troubleshooting and monitoring tools are critical in any environment. Especially in data centers where you have many applications or workloads consolidated on server virtualization platforms such as vSphere. When you ask any network administrators, what are the challenges in troubleshooting data center networks, where server virtualization is prominent? They will say that they don’t have the visibility into virtual networks and they don’t know what is going on in the hypervisor world.

Monitoring and Troubleshooting using Edge Gateway CLIs

VMware vCloud Networking and Security Edge Gateway Command Line Interface (CLI) comes in handy for monitoring and troubleshooting. CLIs can be executed by login to Edge Gateway virtual machine console from vCenter or by remote access using SSH. Currently, Edge Gateway does not support configuration CLIs to apply changes. In this blog, we are going to look at few CLIs using SSH session to Edge Gateway.

Which Template Did That vApp Get Deployed From In vCloud Director?

A common question that I have seen asked by customers is how to correlate a vApp back to it’s original vApp Template in vCloud Director. The primary driver for this information is usually for patching and/or application management but it can also serve other use cases such as application license auditing as well as billing and showback. In prior releases of vCloud Director, identifying this relationship meant monitoring the deployment task which contains the reference to the source vApp Template. This information is usually captured as part of the provisioning process through the use of a custom portal or deployment script. If this information is not captured prior to the task completing, the vApp Template reference would be lost. In vCloud Director 5.1, we have simplified this by allowing you now to retrieve the source vApp Template for any deployed vApp at any point in time.

Unable to Prepare vCD Host – “Host “hostname” is Powered Off”

I came across a strange issue today while working on a vCloud Director project. My vSphere Host had an error, “The Host Spanning configuration on this Host “hostname” is not up to date,” and I wanted to fix this. It suggested I repair my configuration, but of course “Repair Host” was greyed out. So, I disabled my host, and still couldn’t repair my host due to the option still being greyed out.

Cleanup vCloud Director Agent from Host with Running VMs

Typically, unpreparing a host in vCloud Director is fairly straightforward and works without issue. In the rare occasion it doesn’t work, there are posted workarounds for manually removing the vcloud-agent from the vSphere Host through the esxcli. Well, what about the even rarer chance you need to remove the vCloud Director agent from a vSphere Host while it still has workloads (VMs) running on it?

If you’re jumping on this new plug-in, and we don’t see why you wouldn’t, then it’s always good to be armed with official support documentation for those corner cases when something goes wrong.

Help for consumers using VMware products

As we looking at recent search queries and Google links to our KB articles, we’re noticing a trend. Many of you are referring to our products as simply VMware, rather than including the product name (VMware Fusion). This is fine if the problem you’re having is unique enough, but if the issue is general (like “not enough disk space”), you might get page after page of results that are irrelevant to you. This will be true whether you use Google search or our own KB search page.

Corrupted vmdk files?

Some of the Support Requests our Support Engineers deal with for both VMware Fusion and Workstation are data loss and vmdk (virtual hard-drive) issues with customer virtual machines. Issues vary from broken snapshot chains, deleted child or parent vmdk files, corrupt vmdk files, or a file level corruption for virtual machine files. Corruption is not taken lightly by anyone who experiences it, and as well they shouldn’t. It’s a punishing event when it happens.

A common misconception about resource pools

In vSphere resource pools are a great way to divide your overall compute resources into multiple independent pools and prioritize resources among different VMs. But before you create and use them you should make sure that you have fully understood how resource pools work, and what effect their settings have. In the vSphere Resource Management Guide there is a long chapter about Managing Resource Pools that describes how to set them up and how they work using some real world examples. And still it looks like this information is not clear enough (or maybe there is just a part missing in the documentation that explains how resource pools do not work), because there are surprisingly many vSphere environments that use them in the following way:

In the previous blog Scaling Real-time Apps on Cloud Foundry Using Node.js and Redis, we used Redis as a ‘session store’ and also as a ‘pub-sub’ service for chat messages. Understanding VC OPS oversized virtual machines

After teaching vCenter Operations Analyze & Predict and facilitating private workshops with customers I have had this one question that always pops up. What is the criteria for vC Ops to say a VM is oversized or undersized.

To understand how it is calculated is just one thing. What is more important is what you do with the sizing recommendation. Even though Operations may find a machine to be oversized it does not necessarily make it true.

vCenter SSO changes when demoting domain controller

I’m still getting used to the important part vCenter SSO (Single Sign-On) is playing in vSphere 5.1. In my home lab I was switching domain controllers from W2k8 to Windows 2012. Transferred FSMO roles, integrated DNS, changed IP addresses for DNS on all servers and all seemed fine. My w2k8-dom01 server was demoted and removed. Few days later when trying to make a vCenter connection, I couldn’t logon anymore. As a good Windows Admin I of course first rebooted the vCenter VM but (as all real admins know) that seldom fixes the issue. Diving in the vCenter log files at “C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\Logs” I found the following error:

Considerations For Designing a Small vCloud Director Environment – Allocation Models

VMware’s vCloud Director is a very good way for organisations to start to take advantage of cloud computing, including private, public and hybrid models. Cloud computing can offer new efficiencies and cost savings for organisations that optimise it’s use. But where do you start? If you go searching for best practices, design considerations and references for designing and building a vCloud Director environment you will find plenty for large scale deployments. But it might seem difficult to find much in the way of design considerations for starting off with a small vCloud Director environment, such as for a proof of concept, small lab or pilot. Error Removing Nexus 1000V VEM

I encountered this last week and was not find any reference to my specific problem – so I am documenting it here.

I was trying to remove the Cisco Nexus 1000V VEM from the ESXi hosts in my lab.

Converged compute and storage solutions

Lately I have been looking more and more in to converged compute and storage solutions, or “datacenter in a box” solutions as some like to call them. I am a big believer of this concept as some of you may have noticed. Those who have never heard of these solutions, an example of this would be Nutanix or Simplivity. I have written about both Nutanix and Simplivity in the past, and for a quick primer on those respective solutions I suggest to read those articles. In short, these solutions run a hypervisor with a software based storage solution that creates a shared storage platform from local disks. In others, no SAN/NAS required, or as stated… a full datacenter experience in just a couple of U’s.
