Fire warden training is a little different from normal fire safety training. That's why it is so important. Unlike regular training, which teaches the regular inhabitants of a building or work place to be safe in the event of fire (and to curtail the risk of fire as much as they possibly can); training a warden gets a nominated person up to speed about the duties they have, should a fire occur. A warden is a regular building user who has been selected (or who has volunteered) to liaise with emergency services both during and after the event of fire: he or she is also the usual point of contact with the authorities when any inspections or risk assessments are due to take place.
The existence of a warden can make the difference between a successfully managed outbreak and an unsuccessfully contained fire. Fire warden training, then, is clearly of utmost importance. By having a properly trained personnel on site, a business, company or building is ensuring that its property and employees are given the best possible chance of survival. The fire person is there to communicate with fire officers; to make sure that they know who is in and out of a building when a fire occurs; to make sure that they know the locations of all fire fighting equipment on site; and, of course, to make sure that the regular users of a building are well drilled in how they should behave should fire break out.
This last aspect of fire training is perhaps the most important of all, because it represents the link between the behaviour of non professional people (in terms of fire safety) in the event of fire, and those who are employed to prevent and control it. By learning how to drill building users correctly, a fire warden is able to make sure that the things people do when fire breaks out are the things the fire service expects them to be doing - thus eliminating the likelihood of costly or life threatening confusion. If everyone is reading from the same page (and a person who has attended fire warden training is equipped to make sure they are doing exactly that) then an evacuation and roll call goes a lot smoother - and that both saves lives, and leaves plenty of space and time for the fire people to get the blaze under control before it destroys the premises.
Ultimately, all fire safety training is of high importance - fire kills, maims and takes away livelihoods in seconds. Of all the fire training packages available to the business owner or premises supervisor, though, fire warden training is probably the most invaluable asset of the lot. It's the opportunity to have someone who regularly works in a building trained to the basic procedural standards of fire prevention and fire fighting professionals - and that means a building's prevention. Escape and roll call drills will fall in line with official expectation. Don't let fire catch you out - get nominated representatives trained as wardens and sleep easier at night.
